Homemade Hot Chocolate

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and survived Black Friday shopping if you went out 🙂  We had a wonderful day surrounded by family.  Friday we did a little bit of shopping and cut down our Christmas tree!  My husband and I started that tradition after we got married.  It’s by far, one of my favorites.  Yesterday we did our decorating.  I love to decorate!  It was little more interesting this year with A running around grabbing everything!  She was playing with the lights, LOVED the candles in the windows (which are no longer in the windows because the bulb is glass and we don’t want her getting hurt), she put on the Christmas hats a few times and, best of all….she took the Christmas stockings literal.  She kept putting them on her feet and walking around!!  Since it was a little chilly, we made a fire which fit into the Christmas mood perfectly and I made a cup of hot chocolate.

Over the past few years I have been searching for packets of hot chocolate that does not contain Sucralose.  It’s been SO hard!  The only one I have found is Trader Joe’s hot chocolate.  It tastes really good and is extremely rich.

This year I randomly thought, why search?  Why pick up every box of hot chocolate and read the ingredients when I go shopping?  I decided to try making my own.  I always have cacao powder in the house so why not use that?  Cacao powder does have a bitter taste.  To soften that, I have mixed in vanilla powder.  You could even use some cinnamon if you want.  I made it with unsweetened almond milk which helped with the bitter taste.  Typically I am really bad at measuring things, especially if I am just experimenting.  I judge if there is enough strictly by taste and then take notice of the coloring once I get to the perfect taste for me 🙂  I did my best to measure it out so I could share.  I used 3 1/2 tbsp cacao powder and 1 1/2 tbsp vanilla powder.  You could mix in a little bit of sugar if you would like it a little sweeter.

Cacao is the pure and raw form of chocolate.  It’s also a great antioxidant.  Here is a link to a great article about cacao vs. cocoa.  Whenever I get a chance to sneak in cacao instead of cocoa I try to.  Just don’t tell my husband 😉
